In Americus and Sumter County, the climate is great the whole year round
and the area offers a variety of leisure activities to enjoy. The ASCPRA offers
a number of organized sports programs, but residents and visitors to the area can also
enjoy tennis, camping, water skiing, horseback riding, golf, hunting, boating, and even
going on a picnic!
The Americus Blue Tide Swim Team has become a force to be reckoned with in competitive
swimming. Countless youth have achieved many honors with the Blue Tide, and many have
earned scholarships to top colleges and universities. Georgia Southwestern has an indoor
swimming complex that was built largely with donations from the community.
Star Racing came about in 1980; founded by George and Jackie Bryce, it has become a
widely respected team in National Hot Rod Association Pro Stock Motorcycle racing. The
team has been featured on numerous sports channels in competition. The team works out of
a full-service machine shop that stocks high quality parts and has customers, dealers,
and distributors all over the world.
Do you like to play golf? Be sure to bring your clubs when you come to Americus because
you'll find many holes to play! Brickyard Plantation offers 27 holes and is semi-private;
the Veterans State Park offers 18 hole golf and is open to the public; and Wolf Creek
Golf Club is a semi-private 18-hole course. Brickyard has its own teaching center. Every
Saturday, they host a dogfight competition,
organized by the club. There is also the Hole-In-One Club, where there is group play on
Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Whoever scores an ace wins a membership and credit at the
golf shop. Money left over is used toward future tournaments. The club also has a
regular Tuesday morning men's fellowship breakfast and golf scramble. Brickyard also
has a new Partners for Juniors program, aimed at youngsters ages 11-17; it encourages
parents, grandparents and friends to become mentors to young golfers. Many local
organizations choose Wolf Creek Golf Club for their fund-raising events. A summer
golf camp for youngsters is held at Wolf Creek as well, in conjunction with the
Americus-Sumter County Parks and Recreation Authority.
If you like to hunt and/or fish, you'll love Americus and Sumter County! There are many
creeks and lakes off the Flint River that offer plenty of challenging opportunities for
licensed anglers. Lake Blackshear is the site of numerous tournaments, and every year
this 8,000+ acre wonder attracts vacationers from near and far away to fish for bream,
bass, perch, and catfish. There are lots of deer, quail, ducks, doves, and wild turkeys
for superb hunting.
Among the top places to go fishing are Lake Blackshear, Muckalee Creek (from Murphy's
Mill Creek to Lake Jennifer), Wolf Creek, and Young's Mill Pond in Plains.
Visitors who are into hunting will be glad to know about the hunting preserves in Sumter
County. Wise Old Pine Hunting Preserve attracts quail, deer and turkey hunters and
offers an eight-man lodge built from three loghouses, equipped with modern furnishings.
Meals, jeeps, dogs and full-time guides are also present to help make your hunt a great
one. Lorac Plantation is located in neighboring Lee County, and offers a lodge that
overlooks a pond and a trap range that is ideal for quail hunting. Other area
plantations are Tale Feathers, Millpond, Grey Moss, Mulcoa, and Wildfare. A new
facility, the Bird-In-Hand Plantation, is a bird hunting range that encompasses using
a mule-drawn wagon and hunting dogs. They also have a sport clay shooting range, which
is open year-round.
There is something for anyone and everyone in Americus and Sumter County, from young to
young-at-heart!
