Americus-Sumter County Parks and Recreation Authority
Growing and Moving Ahead

"The sky's the limit" may well be an old cliche, but it definitely applies to the position that Americus and Sumter County face for future development economically. Considering that our area combines a variety of industry and manufacturing concerns, vibrant places of tourism, and facilities for education and health care that bring "state-of-the-art" to mind, it's no wonder times are becoming exciting for our corner of the world. A great precedent was set when Sumter County passed a special tax to fund economic development - a tax that is paying off in dividends.

Training and research wise, Americus and Sumter County are in an enviable position - fortunate to have the services of the Center for Business and Economic Development at Georgia Southwestern State University. The center offers research and management training, and is home for Georgia's Main Street Program. GSW University and South Georgia Technical Institute offer a wide variety of training options to prepare students and citizens for the work and world of tomorrow.

Transportation wise, things look good as well. Sumter County is adjacent to both Interstate 75 and Interstate 185, while Highway 19 and Highway 280, both four-laned, cut through our area. There are several local trucking and freight carrier terminals, in addition to Souther Field, which is operated as a general airport. Rail service is provided by Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Georgia Southwestern. Americus is also only a two hour drive away from Atlanta - thus, Hartsfield International Airport is closeby.
